Important places to visit in Assam :

Guwahati : Guwahati is situated on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra. This fast growing metropolis is gateway to the north-eastern India. Although Guwahati is the most important commercial hub of the region. This capital of Assam is located at the adjoining township Dispur.


Places to visit in Guwahati :

The famous Shakti temple of mother goddess kamakhya on the Nilachal hills. The ancient shiva temple of Umananda situated on the peacock Island in the middle of the river Brahmaputra. The Nabagraha temple, Srimanta Sankardev kalakshetra, Balaji temple, science museum, Vadisthashram, state museum,state zoo-cum-Batanical garden, planetarium,saraighat bridge over Brahmaputra, The Guwahati oil refinery,Lachit Barphukan park and Guwahati University are the places worth visiting.


Hajo : Situated on the north bank of Brahmaputra,32 km from Guwahati. Hajo is the meeting point of Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu faiths. The most important relegious shrines being the Hayagriva Madhab and the Poa Mecca. This place reflect the Unity In Diversity of Assam.


Haflong : Situated at a distance of 353 kms from Guwahati. The only station in Assam,it is district headquarter of North Cachar Hills district. A beautiful lake called the Haflong Lake is situated in the heart of the town.


Jorhat : Jorhat, another major tea producing area, located on the edge of the Brahmaputra, South-west of sivsagar,is a major cultural centre.


Majuli : Majuli, the world's inhabited reverine island which is revered for its Satras or Vaishnavite monasteries,is near Jorhat. The Satras here are significant for Assam because they were set up by Srimanta Sankardeva, the leader of Vaishnavite revivalism in 16 th century.


Dibrugarh : Dibrugarh is located 445 km from Guwahati. A lovely riverside town in Upper Assam is important for tea production.


Barpeta : It is famous for its Vaishnava Monastery containing the shrine of Sri Sri Madhavdeva, successor to the Vaishnava reformer srimanta Sankardeva. Barpeta is also known for its exclusive wood craft and ivory products.


Sualkuchi : Sualkuchi is famous for Assamese Silk-Muga and Pat.


Sibasagar : About 363 km from Guwahati. Sibasagar, which literally means the ocean of Shiva is town dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the oldest town of Assam which was also the capital of the mighty Ahoms who ruled Assam for six centuries.
